It's August!
Unless this month has some kind of personal significance, the fact that August has arrived means very little - unless you're a football fan. August means the end of the drought, the end of the withdrawal pains, the end of a long year of boring baseball or over-hyped hoops. August means preseason football and the prelude to the big sports betting bonanza. So, if you haven't ordered your NFL (first preseason game is Aug. 8) and college football annuals (Tulsa at Tulane on Sept. 4), you best hurry!

New to the list of pro football magazines at Gambler's Book Shop this year is Phil Steele's Pro Football magazine, in tandem with the Phil Steele College Football magazine and a nice addition to the other very popular annual the Marc Lawrence NFL magazine. Northcoast Sports (Phil Steele's publisher) and Playbook Enterprises (Marc Lawrence's publishing arm) have been among the most popular producers of football statistical information and previews for many years. Two other magazines, highly sought-after because of the power ratings they carry are Game Plan's Annual College Preview and Game Plan Annual NFL Preview.

Newest Titles

Just when we think a game has lost its appeal, up pops a book to prove us wrong. Blackjack titles sell well but they don't fly off the shelf the way new poker books do. So we were surprised when our newest addition to the retail store and web catalog sold out -- twice! (Don't worry; we have more in stock.) The Color of Blackjack. (See the podcast information  on column 3 for a link to an interview with the author, Daniel  Dravot.)

And then customers start asking for another book we recently ordered, The Ultimate Edge by Mark Billings. What a story! If you want to know what it was like in the trenches, playing blackjack in the 1980s, you won't want to miss this one.

For the poker fans, the long-awaited book by Charley Swayne titled Swayne's Advanced Degree in Hold'em.

And helping cover all kinds of topics comes the latest in and newest approach to pace handicapping from Randy Giles, Extreme Pace Handicapping.

LATE ARRIVAL

Moe Daliz: Mr. Mob

If you want the real scoop behind the man who looks and sounds squeeky clean but ... buy the book ... Howard Schwartz  will be reviewing this next week!

Latest Podcasts
If you recall, we missed a scheduled podcast due to the World Series of Poker, when we took a portable recording device to the Rio and wrangled a bunch of players, authors and experts to talk to us. That’s almost edited and ready to go … and might even be finished by the time this newsletter gets to you. Meanwhile, we have a couple of nice interviews on the site now that are worth listening to. Here's a direct link to the podcast. You can get it via iTunes as well.

Michael Hillin, an experienced, and innovative designer in workbook statistics for football, baseball, basketball and horse racing who specializes in football, and baseball stopped in to deliver his Las Vegas Linemaker Workbook and talk to Howard Schwartz. Michael designs specific statistical spread sheet for his other handicapper's needs. His says "I went from a bicycle to a Mercedes in Las Vegas, only a few can say that! ." He retired in 2008 and handicaps full time. (What a great life

The second guest goes by the name Daniel Dravot and he is the author of Color of Blackjack . Daniel is a professional card counter who uses and advanced version of the KO blackjack strategy and count to help him spend his life as a money-earning card counter. He developed a terrific charting technique that makes the count easier for the average player to master.

Daniel has just released a DVD that's an addition to his book. It's called Card Counting: The Definitive Course.
This is for the card counter who didn't go to MIT and doesn't want to do a lot of math to get the job done.

Other Good Stuff
If you're looking for additional information on some of the newer titles in stock, check out Howard's Book Review Column on the Las Vegas Review-Journal's website.

Remember, our Howard is NOT  a book critic. We just try to give people more information about a title than you can get on the dust jacket or back cover. So if you really need to know what's inside a book, check out the reviews weekly.

Our latest posts include a couple of customer comments and questions, a link to the Las Vegas Sun article on the store by columnist Jeff Haney. We also added some picture of some of the guests you'll hear when the WSOP podcast goes "live."
